Government Funding for Startups
Join HealthcareMN as we introduce the NSF SBIR/STTR grant process and resources you can tap into in Minnesota to develop winning applications.
For over 40 years, America’s Seed Fund powered by the National Science Foundation (NSF) (NSF SBIR/STTR) has helped startups develop their ideas and bring them to market. They fund up to 400 companies each year. Phase I grants max out at $256K and Phase II grants at $1.7M.
NSF uses these criteria to determine which projects to fund:
Transformative: Your innovation could make a difference to people worldwide or revolutionize an industry.
High-risk: Your product is based on unproven technology that needs further testing (and funding for that testing).
Market pull: You have evidence that your product or service could meet an important, unmet need for your customers.
Scale: If you successfully bring your product or service to market, it could form the foundation for a scalable business and make a large impact in your target market.
The Minnesota SBIR/STTR Assistance Office (MNSBIR) is a resource providing free and confidential assistance to Minnesota firms looking to access SBIR/STTR funding. You will hear from Pat Dillon, Director of MNSBIR, about their operations and how you can benefit from their services. You will also hear from John Prichard, Cofounder and Lead Design Engineer from HabitAware. HabitAware, a local startup was awarded a $225K NSF SBIR Grant in December 2019 - HabitAware’s 2nd SBIR Grant in 2 years. He will give us insights on their product and how to develop a winning grant!
