[Event Debrief] Nerd Therapy: Patient-centered Design

Healthcare.mn and The Nerdery teamed up yesterday morning to bring our healthcare community a dynamic panel discussion regarding patient-centered design and its significance in forward-thinking, relevant solution development. In one fashion or another, all three founders were looking to decrease one of the largest risk factors in health care, which is also one of the most solvable, adherence.  In doing so, all have created different interventions that focus on engaging the patient or caregiver to increase interactions with healthcare providers. The patient, however, is not the only benefactor of their platforms; payers (insurance companies), providers (health care practitioners) and the greater health care system in general all benefit from better patient compliance.

                     

To really design solutions for the patient, Adam, Raj and David all understood that learning and knowing the person was central in creating a solution that would resonate. Each had a unique approach to understanding their users. Adam started with his own experience in health care, and then extended his user research to others in the same circumstances; able to relate on a personal level. Raj, as a nephrologist, was uniquely able to talk with other physicians and learn every day from his own patient population.  David, having spent years in the provider industry, realized he knew a lot about infrastructure and claims, but little about health care, so he went about learning more – testing and re-testing assumptions and possible solutions along the way.  Along their paths, they learned different barriers they needed to address to ensure they met the needs of the patient.
